Some engagement sessions just have a little bit of everything, and Amanda + Scott’s Salem, Massachusetts engagement session was one of them. Think cozy bar vibes, downtown Salem streets, waterfront portraits, and lots of laughter. We even revisited the spot where their first date took place!
As a Mystic-based wedding photographer, I love when couples choose locations that actually mean something to them. The photos feel more personal, and the whole session becomes a little piece of their story. Amanda + Scott’s engagement photos in Salem were the perfect example of that.
We kicked things off at Adriatic, the Salem restaurant where Amanda and Scott had their first date. Amanda drove up from Boston to meet Scott, partly because she was interested in the North Shore while looking for a condo. Talk about a date that turned into something much bigger!
Scott remembers feeling both anxious and excited that day. He wanted to make a good first impression, especially since Amanda had made the drive to see him. Meanwhile, Amanda was still figuring out whether this cute guy from Hinge was worth the trip. Spoiler alert: he was!
Getting to photograph them together at Adriatic made this part of their engagement session extra special. We captured that vintage, film-inspired bar atmosphere, with warm tones, black and white images, and a little editorial flair. It felt romantic without being overly posed, which is always my favorite combination.
After the bar, we headed out into downtown Salem. The historic streets, brick sidewalks, and beautiful architecture gave us so much variety. I love incorporating city streets into engagement photos because they add a little movement and personality to the gallery.
Amanda and Scott were so much fun together. We mixed in some classic portraits with playful moments that showed off their personalities. The goal was never to make everything look perfect. It was to capture the way they naturally interact, laugh, and make each other feel.
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is getting to photograph couples in a way that feels like them. Whether that’s wandering around a city, grabbing a drink at a favorite bar, or spending time at home, the little details often become the most meaningful photographs.
We wrapped up their Salem engagement session by the water, with the lighthouse in the background and the kind of relaxed, romantic atmosphere I could photograph all day. The softer light and waterfront setting were the perfect contrast to the downtown photos.
There were sweet, quiet moments mixed in with plenty of laughter and a few playful lifts. Those are the moments I want couples to remember when they look back at their photos years from now. Not just what they looked like, but how it felt to be there together.
One thing I loved hearing from Amanda and Scott was how their relationship grew through the everyday moments. For Scott, watching Amanda search for a condo helped him picture their future together. He realized how much he wanted to be part of the life they were building.
For Amanda, it was a weekend of meeting his family, spending time with friends, and singing along to music in his truck. She remembers him holding her hand across the console and thinking, I could get used to this.
And honestly, isn’t that what love is so often about? It’s not always one big, dramatic moment. Sometimes it’s the quiet realization that life feels a little better with someone beside you.
Scott proposed on July 11 at Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott. He planned a bonfire, brought both families together, and got down on one knee after a walk along the beach. It was a thoughtful proposal that brought together the people and traditions they love most.
Amanda and Scott are getting married on October 22, 2027, at OceanCliff in Rhode Island, and I already know their wedding day will be something special.
After spending this time with them in Salem, I’m even more excited to see their story continue. Their engagement session was the perfect mix of vintage-inspired imagery, meaningful locations, and genuine moments that feel like them.
If you’re planning your own engagement session, let this be your reminder that you don’t have to choose a field, a beach, or a garden just because that’s what everyone else does. Think about the places that mean something to you. Your first-date spot, your favorite neighborhood, the bar where you always meet friends, or even your own home can make the best backdrop.
As a Connecticut wedding and engagement photographer serving Mystic, Rhode Island, and beyond, I want your photos to feel like more than a collection of pretty pictures. I want them to feel like your story, captured in a way you’ll love looking back on for years to come.
Amanda + Scott, thank you for letting me document this season of your lives. I can’t wait for OceanCliff in 2027!
